Hi! My name is Agina Rai, and I am a girl. I was born in Nepal, a country with stunning landscapes and the world’s tallest mountain, Mount Everest. My country might have the world’s tallest mountain and breathtaking views, but it does not have many opportunities for girls. As a young, stubborn, and carefree girl, I was blind to see the disparity and injustice between boys and girls, especially in education. My proud parents who were unfortunate to get an education taught me the significance of education. As I grew up, I started noticing girls regarded as a burden instead of a blessing. Young girls forced into marriage against their will with an incomplete education and a voice terrified to use. Starting then, I have set myself to be an educated girl with a voice that I am unafraid to use. Coming to America in 2011 has broadened my perspective on women’s education. Witnessing many independent women carrying out their dreams, building careers, and creating an identity of their own gave me courage and confidence. With a dream of working in the medical field and changing my country perspective on girls’ education, I am majoring in Biology. I hope someday I can encourage young girls to stand up for themselves and say I am proud to be a girl.
